Diamond Four C's

Large Diamond Buyer | Diamond FAQ

How are diamonds priced and evaluated

Cut

The cut is one of the diamonds most important feature and contributes to the diamonds brilliance. When a diamond has perfect cut proportions light shoots down and bounces back out of the top of the diamond which gives you the most sparkle. A diamonds cut grade is an objective measure of light performance and the better the cut and proportions the more fire a diamond will have. If a diamond has poor symmetry the light that enters the diamond can be misdirected as it enters and exits the diamond which is why shallow and too deep of cuts are less desireable.

Color

A diamonds color is actually referring to lack of color and is measured on a scale of D-Z, with D being colorless and continues down the scale to Z with increasing color presence. A colorless diamond is pure and contains no hue and is bought at a considerably higher value.

Clarity

A diamonds clarity is measured by the abscense of inclusions and or blemishes within the diamond. Diamond clarity is measured on a scale of 6 categories and can divided into 11 different grades(FL, IF, VVS1, VVS2, VS1, VS2, SI1, SI2, I1,I2,I3) FL stands for Flawless. FL is a perfect diamond and free of any imperfections or blemishes while most diamonds are not perfect the closer it gets the higher the value it commands.

Carat

Carat is how a diamond weighs. Larger diamonds are more valuable because they are a rarer. Although carat's is important when discussing price its not the only thing that makes up pricing but one of the four factors that go in to determining a price. You can have two diamonds of equal size but different clarity and colors and they would be miles apart.
