Large Cents

Large cents

are a classification of pennies that were produced at the Philadelphia mint

in the United States starting in 1793 and running all the way up to 1857. The

composition of large cents is of pure copper. In the early years of producing

large cents, there were many different die varieties as the dies used for producing

for the large cents were generally hand made. This makes for many desirable

variations for large cents collectors. Of the most valuable large cents produced

is the 1793 Flowing Hair, Chain Reverse large cent, the first America produced

in it's beginning days. The Liberty Cap large cents were produced next in the

line of large cents and was made for just a few years between 1793 and 1796.

Many varieties

in this series of large cents exist and some can carry quite a significant value.

After the Liberty Cap large cents came the Draped Bust large cents, which were

produced between 1796 and 1807. Many of the large cents in this series of coins

can be quite common as these are some of the easiest large cents to acquire

for collections. The Classic Head large cents followed up the Draped Bust large

cents and were produced between 1808 and 1814.

The Classic

Head design is one of the most aesthetically pleasing of the large cents as

they were produced in a time when the Philadelphia mint was coming into some

technological advancement for the time, enabling them to produce more uniform

coins without so many errors or die breaks to contend with. After a one year

break from making the large cents, the mint returned to produce the Liberty

Head large cents. The Liberty Head large cents had a basic design that would

last from 1816 all the way to the end of the large cents era in 1857.

The Matron

Head large cents, the Young Matron Head large cents and the Braided Hair large

cents are changes over the life of this design would show that the Liberty Head

large cents could adapt to an ever changing current of burgeoning fashion and

confidence in early America. At Nevada Coin & Jewelry in Las Vegas, our coin
